The sculptor Kari Huhtamo (b. 1943) is an innovator in Finnish sculpture. He is a wide-ranging, highly creative artist, whose works defy definition. They provide proof that it is possible to step into the mainstream of modernism on your own terms.

Their beautifully curving lines and sharply delineated forms have a cool elegance of material and motion. It is evident that this artist born on the Arctic Circle carries within him his childhood landscape devoid of detail, and allows it to appear in his art.

The poetic tension in Huhtamo’s works arises out of the juxtaposition of forms referring to nature, extremely condensed expression and mirror-smooth steel, all implemented with the latest technology. Despite their size and mass, they seem immaterial, glistening like a trout’s flank or a butterfly’s wing.
